Drew Peterson has fired the attorney who loudly warned against calling Kathleen Savio’s divorce lawyer as a defense witness – a move which Peterson’s lead counsel insisted upon and many considered a devastating miscalculation.
Peterson notified attorney Steve Greenberg of his decision Tuesday, just days after jurors said divorce lawyer Harry Smith’s testimony tipped the scales in the prosecution's favor and led to the retired Bolingbrook police sergeant’s conviction.

Smith told jurors that Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, asked him if she could get more money in a divorce if she threatened to tell police about her husband’s role in Savio’s death.
Lead attorney Joel Brodsky decided to call Smith against the advice of the rest of the defense team and after the judge warned him of the possible consequences. Greenberg was overheard pleading with him not to do it in a courthouse hallway.
The debate ended when Peterson sided with Brodsky.
“I think Mr. Peterson was represented by five wonderful lawyers out of six,” Greenberg said Tuesday. “His loyalty to the sixth is disconcerting.”
Greenberg – who had argued several motions during the prosecution’s case to limit what Smith could tell jurors under state questioning – warned Brodsky that he could be opening Pandora’s Box during their hallway shouting match.
“I've filed 74 (expletive) motions to keep him out and now you're going to undo all of it,” Greenberg told Brodsky in a loud, exasperated voice.
Tensions, however, had been building between Brodsky and Greenberg long before Smith's appearance. They clashed earlier this year when Greenberg publicly suggested that Peterson’s and Brodsky’s sophomoric television and radio appearances in the weeks after Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, disappeared were far more damaging to his client’s case than a made-for-TV movie about Peterson.
Though Greenberg had a good rapport with Will County Judge Edward Burmila and had been winning most of the defense team’s successful motions, Brodsky banned him from making objections and often hushed him in court.
Still, Greenberg and Brodsky presented a united front before the TV cameras during their frequent news conferences. Wearing sunglasses and wide grins, they often poked fun at prosecutors and witnesses.
The duo, along with defense attorney Joe Lopez, were sharply criticized for a press conference during jury selection in which they mocked Stacy Peterson’s disappearance. They later apologized.
Brodsky had never tried a homicide case before Peterson hired him in 2007.
Brodsky has repeatedly told the Tribune that Greenberg was not a team player.
“Even though Mr. Greenberg did win many of the motions, these were on small issues,” Brodsky said Tuesday. “Greenberg lost the big ones, such as banning the hearsay previously found to be (inadmissible), and keeping the ‘hit man’ testimony out.”
I think that Drew had every right to fire his lawyers, I don't think that it is going to help anything because he was already convicted for a crime everyone knows he did. The lawyer did all he could but its hard to prove a guilty person innocent.

I think that Brodsky was too harsh on Greenberg. He was doing his best on defending Drew, he won him most of the motions. Drew is putting too much trust in Brodsky too ,i think this whole article shows just how much of a disaster the whole case was. (although maybe if it wasn't as bad then the prosecution would have a harder time)
ReplyDeleteSeems like Brodsky is a jerk, and im very confused on what Greenberg did wrong. Peterson deserves to be convicted especially after mocking Stacy Petersons's disappearance.
ReplyDeleteYa i have no idea why you would even think about bringing a witness like that into a trial, and then after it blew up in his face he fired his lawyer that opposed bringing such a dangerous witness in.
ReplyDeletePeterson can't win the case. It's not going to make a difference if he fires the attorney or not because he isn't going to win anyway. Everyone knows that Peterson is guilty.
ReplyDeleteJoel Brodsky is out of it. There is no way that he should be on the defense of Drew Peterson. If not for him, Peterson would have been aquitted. Drew Peterson essentially got himself convicted by listening to a bone-head lawyer.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Drew Peterson hired an attourney with no homicide experience and expect Brodsky to win the trial is pure stupidity. Peterson did not pick the right lawyers to represent him, plus he lost. Brodsky was a no one when he was hired, and it is Peterson's fault for hiring an inexperienced guy.
ReplyDeleteFor how terrible he is, I do believe that Peterson does have the right to fire his attorney. And because Mr. Greenberg didn't back him up in calling Kathleen Savio’s divorce lawyer as a defense witness, Peterson fired him and sided with brodsky
ReplyDeleteI think in this case Greenberg should have been fired because he didn't do the job Drew Peterson paid him to do. He's paying Greenberg to keep him out of trouble, and Greenberg is not doing that. Greenberg made poor judgement calls many times throughout Peterson's trials, thus he deserves to get fired.
ReplyDeleteDrew Peterson is clearly not smart. He fired the only guy that gave him any sort of chance at winning the case. Brodsky has less experience and for some reason this is who Peterson turned to. It was very clear that this was a bad decision and Brodsky was the only one pulling for this to happen. Clearly, Greenberg was the smart choice and Peterson didn't make it, and for that I am thankful.
ReplyDeleteWell, I mean, Peterson has the right to do whatever he wants with his lawyers. I feel like there is no point to firing him now because he was already found guilty and needs all the help he can get. Even if they appeal, I doubt he will be able to get out of doing jailtime because everyone already thinks he did it.
ReplyDeleteIt really blew up in his face and Peterson deserves to go to jail
ReplyDeleteI believe that these actions will do neither harm, nor be beneficial. At this point, Petersen has been convicted of an extremely high profile case. My point is, no adjutment to his representation will do any good for his image. Brodsky's temper representsan already bad situation badly.
ReplyDeletePeterson firing Greenberg is ridiculous considering he was the one that knew what he was doing, while Brodsky was the one who screwed Peterson over. While it is in his full right to remove any lawyer from his counsel that he wants, he is firing the one person that knew how calling the witness would hurt his case.
ReplyDeleteI think Brodsky is an idiot, and he should be the one being fired, not Greenberg. Peterson is making all the wrong moves but he's already guilty so nothing is going to help him now.

Drew Petterson legaly has the right to fire the lawyer who opposed Savio divorce as a witness. The lawyer who represented him him didn't represent him very well. Peterson took the side of brodsky who had Peterson's back from the begining of the investigation
ReplyDeleteI think Peterson has the right to fire Greenberg he's allowed to do whatever he wants with the people he hires. Since Greenberg didn't do what Peterson wanted he should've fired him.
ReplyDeletePeterson has every right to fire his lawyer. However, he was wrong in firing Greenberg because Greenberg was right in not allowing the divorce attorney. In this case, Peterson hurt himself by firing Greenberg. In the end though everyone knew that he was guilty.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this argument is pretty pointless since it was pretty obvious Peterson was guilty. Brodsky had a huge plate to fill if he wanted to prove Peterson innocent.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Peterson has the right to fire Greenberg, but I do not think that it was the right thing to do. Greenberg seems to be the more experienced one and Brodsky seemed to be doing many things wrong. Peterson fired the guy that was winning all of the motions for him and gave him one of the best chances to win the case. I am overjoyed at the fact that Peterson chose to follow the wrong guy.
ReplyDeleteI think that Peterson made a bad move firing Greenberg because Greenbergwas the one that was right about not having the divorce lawyer involved in the trial. if anything Peterson should of fired Brodsky.
ReplyDeleteFrom this article, Brodsky sounds like a huge moron. It seemed like Greenberg was doing a good job and Brodsky was jus completly idiodic. Brodsky's decision to call smith to the trial is a major reason why Brodsky and Peterson lost thge trial. The fact that Peterson sided with Brodsky of Greenberg proves that this man should go to jail.

I think that Drew Peterson shouldn't have fired his lawyer because he did it to himself. Everybody knew that he did it and he should blame himself instead of blaming his lawyer. I think that Greenberg was right and I don't get why Peterson fired Greenberg and not Brodsky because when Brodsky brought Smith into the case, it made Peterson lose the case.
ReplyDeleteI think that Peterson can do what he wants and fire Greenberg, but I think that it was a horrile decision to agree with Brodsky. Now Peterson has a very slim chance of getting away with this case.
ReplyDeleteI can't decide whether Peterson or Brodsky is the bigger idiot. Greenberg, despite making the mistake of defending Peterson, seems to at least have an idea of how to win a case. I'm actually pretty pumped he was fired, because had Peterson listened to him Peterson would have walked. There were no benefits to having this divorce lawyer take the stand. Through this action, Brodsky certified himself as a horrible lawyer, and Peterson certified himself as a criminal and an idiot.

I think that firing Greenberg wasn't the best idea considering that he had won many mentions for Drew. The mistake was made on Drew's part for bringing in the divorce lawyer. Greenberg could have helped Peterson later on in the trial because Brodsky just seems too cocky but isn't as good as Greenberg is. So firing him, not the smartest thing.
ReplyDeleteI think Bronski was wrong and that he shouldn't have fired Greenberg because it was mostly Bronski"s fault. Bronski was a horriuble lawyer and there was no upside to having the divorce lawyer take the stand.
ReplyDeletePeterson has the right to fire the people that work for him even if its not the best move. He's just hurting himself. But this never would have happened if he didnt do anything wrong in the first place. Bottom line its all his falt and he cant blame anyone but himself.
ReplyDeleteAlex Colter
Peterson has the right to fire who he wants becauses if he feels the person he fired is hurting his chances of wining the case. Their are no benifts of having brodsky so thats why i think he got fired.
